Celebrating the Autistic Mind

It’s my second year helping to host this beloved art show. Out of all the events of the year, this one is my most favorite.

Last year, I cried listening to the artists discuss their work while their proud parents, friends and families stood beside them. This year, my heart expanded right along with the number of artists, pieces and performances in this year’s program. From designing the programs and flyers, to the labor of love it took to put this show together, I was so proud to be a part of this wonderful event. In a world that so often rewards masking and minimization, how beautiful to be able create with freedom and abandon and to share it with a community who really sees you.

The show boasts a wide variety and range of artists from ages 8 to 54 years old. Graphic artists, painters, sculptors, photographers, singers and more — we greeted so many smiling faces from opening night into the weekend. It was truly a joy to witness the growth and changes both in the artists’ work and in the artists themselves after just one years’ time. I met so many new and lovely people and hugged many familiar ones, too.

I am always so moved at the vulnerability and openness within the artists, whose work is sometimes their main form of communication. Celebrating the Autistic Mind is truly that — a celebration of the many, many gorgeous and creative minds within our community, all of whom deserve the time and space to be understood and appreciated.

I am so grateful to be a part of a community that deeply values inclusion and accessibility, and that does not shy away from differences or disabilities. ALL people matter. ALL people have value. ALL people belong. ALL people deserve to be heard, seen, and respected exactly as they are. 💛
